Growing the seedlings
Three steps, a few weeks apart. Everything you need fits on a windowsill.
Collect mangrove pods
- Visit a coastal area or mangrove park where you plan to plant the trees.
- Look for mangrove propagules (pods), normally found near mature mangrove trees.
- Wrap the pods in wet cloths to keep them moist while you carry them home.
- Once home, wash them gently with clean tap water to remove any dirt.
Prepare the growth container
- Use recycled plastic bottles (PET bottles) as containers.
- Fill the bottles with clean water and place the mangrove pods in them.
- Add a natural anti-mosquito solution to prevent larvae from breeding.
- Add three drops of plant vitamins to support growth.
Nurture the pods
- Replace the water once a week to keep it fresh.
- Watch as the pods sprout and grow into seedlings.
- Enjoy the process. This part takes patience and rewards it.
It is perfectly fine to talk to your mangroves, as long as they don't talk back.
Nursery and hardening
Once the seedlings reach a healthy size they need to adapt to the coastal environment before planting.
Bring them to the designated nursery area near the plantation site and leave them there for at least two weeks before planting. This step is what lets them adjust to the real conditions of the site, and skipping it is the most common reason young mangroves fail.
Planting day
After hardening, the seedlings are ready for their permanent home.
Site selection. Plant in pre-identified areas that need mangrove restoration.
Planting day. Join fellow volunteers to plant the seedlings in the selected locations.
Ongoing care. Visit the site regularly to check on your trees' growth.
